SWELL helped the customer redefine a device for outdoor training, drone operations, agricultural monitoring, and field inspection as an intelligent terminal for environmental data collection.
Project Background
An overseas outdoor technology customer first approached SWELL to develop a wind speed measurement device for outdoor training, event sites, golf, and similar scenarios.
In the early discussions, the customer mainly focused on wind speed data. As the project moved forward, we found that real outdoor users needed more than a single wind speed reading. They wanted a device that could also collect temperature, humidity, air pressure, and other environmental data, while supporting data recording, on-site viewing, and future software application development.
Customer Challenges
Traditional anemometers can complete basic measurement tasks, but they have clear limitations in real outdoor applications:
The customer did not simply need a standard wind speed meter. They needed an intelligent terminal that could work in outdoor environments, collect multiple types of environmental data, and leave room for future application expansion.
SWELL’s Project Understanding
At the beginning of the project, the customer wanted to combine wind speed measurement with a PDA.
After evaluation, SWELL believed that simply adding a wind speed module to a device would still limit the product's value.
In real outdoor use, the more important questions are:
Is the device easy to carry? Is it suitable for long-time handheld operation? Can the data be viewed and recorded easily? Will charging, camera use, battery heat, and changes in temperature or humidity affect device performance?
Based on these points, SWELL suggested that the customer should not define the product only as a “smart anemometer.” Instead, it should be upgraded into an Outdoor Environmental Data Collection Terminal.
What SWELL Did?
Based on the customer’s real application scenarios, SWELL joined the early product definition and solution planning process:
These suggestions were not made simply to add more functions. The purpose was to make the product more closely match how real users would use it in the field.
Project Value
Through this project discussion, the customer gained a clearer sense of the product direction.
The device should not be only an upgraded version of a traditional anemometer. It should be an intelligent environmental data collection terminal for outdoor training, drone operations, agricultural monitoring, field inspection, and other outdoor applications.
This case reflects the value of SWELL in ODM projects.
True ODM is not just about putting requested functions into a device. It is about helping the customer understand how the product should be used in real scenarios, how it should be verified, and how it leaves room for future upgrades.
