Customized Wired-Control PDA for Laser Welding Robots
SWELL helped the customer modify a rugged PDA into an on-site control terminal for laser welding robots. By adding an M8 industrial circular connector, dedicated physical buttons, and software adaptation, the device achieved a more secure wired connection and safer field operation.
Project Background
The customer is a company that develops and manufactures laser welding robots for special working environments. Their robots are mainly used in high-altitude work, harsh environments, narrow spaces, and other scenarios where manual operation is difficult.
In these environments, operators need a handheld terminal to control the robot and check its working status on site. The customer originally planned to use a PDA as the control terminal, but a standard PDA could not directly meet the requirements of robot field control in terms of connector design, physical buttons, and structural reliability.
For the customer, this PDA was not a regular data collection device. It had to become part of the robot system, with a stable connection, clear operation, and reliable performance in complex field conditions.
Customer Challenges
At the beginning of the project, the customer was most concerned about the strength and convenience of the wired connection between the PDA and the robot.
Robot working environments may involve vibration, cable pulling, dust, moisture, and limited operating space. If a standard connector is used, the interface may become loose or damaged, and control command transmission may be affected.
At the same time, robot control cannot rely solely on the touchscreen. In high-altitude, narrow, or complex environments, operators need clear and reliable physical buttons to trigger key commands. This helps reduce accidental touches and uncertainty during operation.
SWELL’s Understanding and Recommendation
After evaluating the project, SWELL believed that the key was not simply to “add one connector to a PDA.” The PDA needed to be redefined as a wired control terminal for industrial robots.
Based on this understanding, SWELL suggested that the customer focus on three areas.
Compared with standard connectors, an M8 industrial circular connector is better suited for connections to robots and industrial equipment. It helps improve connection stability and reduces risks from vibration, cable pulling, or on-site contamination.
For robot control, some common or critical commands should not depend entirely on the touch screen. Dedicated physical buttons make operation more direct and closer to how field operators work.
Adding an M8 connector is not just about opening a hole in the housing. It also requires changes to the small PCBA FPC, the bottom housing, the bracket, and the internal structure. These changes need to be handled carefully to avoid affecting device strength, protection level, and long-term stability.

Based on the customer’s real working scenario, SWELL customized the PDA in several ways:

Through this customization, the customer received a rugged PDA better suited for on-site robot control.
The connection between the device and the robot became more secure. Key commands became easier and more direct to operate. The whole device was also better suited for use in high-altitude work, narrow spaces, and harsh environments.
For the customer, this project not only solved the connection problem between the PDA and the robot. It also made the handheld control terminal a more practical part of the laser welding robot system.
True customization is not just about adding a connector or a button. It is about understanding the customer’s application scenario, connection method, operation habits, and structural reliability requirements, so the PDA can become a truly usable and reliable part of the customer’s system.
